Big Hairy Myth That Sabotages Christian Dreams

Green Light GoHave you ever heard the expression, “Wait on God?”

Sure, there are times for waiting on God, but that cliche is so misused that it ruins millions of dreams for Christians.

Most people need to QUIT WAITING and get moving!

For example, I have a friend who has the dream of owning a ranch to help children.

Yet, she does nothing to move toward her goal.  She is just “waiting” for God to do something.  She doesn’t study the subject.  She doesn’t look for jobs in that field.  She doesn’t even put together any type of plan for it.  She’s waiting…and waiting…and will likely continue waiting.

People do the same thing in ministry.  They say God called them to ministry and they start waiting for doors to open up.  There is a street corner open already just over there they can get started on.  And their church is likely asking for help in the children’s ministry.  But they’re waiting…

Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.”
Eccl 9:10, NKJV

People do the same thing in business.  They’ll say, “Maybe God wants me to start a business.  If so it will happen some day.”

No, it won’t if you refuse to participate in it.

I love Paul the apostle’s attitude which we can see here…

Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them
Acts 16:6-7, NKJV

The fire in Paul led him to constantly GO.  In fact, God had to tell him when to stop.  He wasn’t sitting around waiting to figure where he should go.  He was already going.  He just needed to be set in the right direction.

Most Christians today are waiting for a sign from heaven to get moving.  Instead get moving, and pay attention if God tells you to stop or change course.

I’ve heard people say that 2/3rds of GOD is GO.  Get moving.  Get actively going after the dreams God has put in your heart.

What is the first step you need to accomplish on the way to your dreams?  Do it today.

While many of us are waiting on God, HE has been waiting on us to get in gear.

It seems like most people don’t want to be led.  They want to dragged kicking and screaming all the way to their goals.

To be led means you have to be willing to move.

What little step did you take toward the goals and dreams God has put in your heart this week?

What will you do next week?

And what’s holding you back from accomplishing what He has put in your heart?

I totally agree we need to do the legwork and let God do the rest. But, if we don’t do the legwork God’s not going to just do it for us. I can’t just sit here and wait for God to write my ebook or build my website. What I have to do is do the best I can today…If I just put forth the legwork and get it done, God will determine the outcome according to His will for me. It has a lot to do with Faith, but faith with action.

I love how David served God. He didn’t just sit in prison and wait for God. He was faithful to God and did what God asked of him. The result for David was becoming Pharoah’s second in command, which made him one of the most powerful men in the world at that time. He didn’t just wait around for God to come and help him, he praised God and did his best in every situation he was put in.

God wants us to do our best in every situation so when it is our time to step up and do His work, we will be ready.

  2. WOW Terry! That really needed to be said, and you said it very well. Faith is all about walking while we are waiting and believing that which we can not see.

I think it takes a lot of faith in God to get going on the desires He put in our heart. It’s a lot easier to do nothing and say we wait on Him. It appears like a spiritual thing to do while in fact it’s the exact opposite. We let our fear freeze us in our tracks instead of actually trusting God and go forward. Thanks Terry for the encouragement to live by faith!

PS-Scott, I think you meant Joseph instead of David… but David would be a great example also.

Ooops…Yes Louis, I did mean Joseph…I guess I had David on my mind for some reason@Louis

    Hi! Terry and brothers,

Sorry I came late but couldn´t before.Anyway this is an interesting suject. For me at the begining of
my walk with the Lord was like that.I was just waiting and doing nothing till something started hitting
in my understanding that if I wanted to achieve something I was the first to make the move and then
God will be there to help and guide. And I can tell you that it´s been like that but you know all is a matter
    of learning.

If anybody here have something in mind pray and go for it and remember that the Lord confirms the word of his servants.

    Blessings to all!

    Hi Terry,

    Good article.

I think the waiting can be translated into FEAR, lack of purpose, and clarity.

Waiting is s-o-o-o-o SAFE and easy. 🙂 It is also boring and unfulfilling.

I procrastinate by constant learning; taking just ONE more class, one more webinar, one more book…
then I’ll be ready, then I’ll be good enough. When I think about the 12 disciples…none of them were Harvard grads or even seminary students for that matter. As a matter of fact, they didn’t even do an alter call. Christ just said, “follow me”. Remember our Father’s words, “good and FAITHFUL servant”. Obedience is the key,not perfection. I am a work in progress..that’s for sure. 🙂
