Solomons Prayer For Wisdom

James chapter one tells us that we should all be praying for wisdom.  Let’s get a confirmation for this.   Who else in the Bible prayed for wisdom instead of just praying for money?

In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.  And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.  Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.  Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?”
II Chronicles 1:7-10

God showed up to Solomon and basically offered to give him anything he asked for.  Solomon could have asked for fame for himself.  He could have asked for the defeat of his enemies.  He could have asked for money (like most of us do).  No.  Solomon didn’t ask for any of that.

He asked for wisdom.  While most of us have spent years praying for money, Solomon didn’t ask for that at all.  He asked for wisdom…and let’s take a look at what God’s response to this was:

And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:  Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.”
2 Chronicles 1:11-12

God answered Solomon’s prayer and gave him wisdom and knowledge.  Take notice of what ALSO came with the wisdom and knowledge.  He received riches, and wealth, and honor to go along with the wisdom.  All of these things are produced by wisdom!  So if you want to receive them, you should be praying for wisdom yourself.

What was the result of Solomon’s prayer and God’s blessing?

Take a look:

And all king Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold, and all the vessels of the house of the forest of Lebanon were of pure gold; none were of silver: it was nothing accounted of in the days of Solomon. For the king had at sea a navy of Tharshish with the navy of Hiram: once in three years came the navy of Tharshish, bringing gold, and silver, ivory, and apes, and peacocks. So king Solomon exceeded all the kings of the earth for riches and for wisdom.  And all the earth sought to Solomon, to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.”
1 Kings 10:21-24

All of the drinking vessels that Solomon owned were pure gold.  All the vessels of the house were pure gold.  Nothing was made of silver, because silver wasn’t worth anything during Solomon’s reign.  That’s a lot of gold.  There was so much gold that silver didn’t even have value anymore.

I’ve heard of some wealthy people, but I have never seen anything like that.   Think about it.  Bill Gates may be the richest man in the world, but he has nothing on Solomon.  ALL the earth came to hear Solomon’s wisdom.  And we have someone greater than that in our midst today – Jesus!

That is God’s desire for the church.  He desires to fill us liberally with all wisdom so that the whole earth comes to us to hear our wisdom!  In the past they have been making fun of us and saying that Christianity is just a crutch that poor people need.  Well, times are changing.  The Gospel must be preached in the entire world and receiving God’s wisdom is the way to do it.

I know this kind of talk offends some people.  They don’t want to ask God for too much, and they don’t even realize they are just being selfish.  That’s right.  Only asking God for just enough money for you and yours to get by is selfish.  God has given us a mission to do and it’s not to sit in caves waiting for the end.

We are called to preach the Gospel to the world and it is going to take a lot of money to do this.  So you don’t need money just for yourself.  You need money to finance missionary trips.  You need money to feed all the poor in your city.  You need money to pay your minister a good salary.

You are called to be God’s gateway of finances on this earth.  That’s why you are interested in this subject.  That’s why you picked up this book.  God doesn’t print money in heaven and He doesn’t rain it down on the earth.  He uses men and women filled with His wisdom to go out and get the money to finance His kingdom.

“A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.”
Proverbs 13:22

The wealth of the sinner is being saved up for the just.  Do you think they will just hand it over?  No way.  You are called to go out there and earn it using the wisdom of God.  That’s why you must pray for God’s wisdom every day, and begin studying exactly what God has to say about money all throughout the Bible.

Begin praying for wisdom today in faith…and never doubt for one second that He is filling you with more of His limitless storehouse of wisdom every single day of your life.
